Meets with HIST 4810. This course focuses on the role played by Christian missions in global interactions from the seventeenth through to the twentieth century. It will examine the diversity of missionary strategies and the varied responses of non-Christians to evangelization. Questions we will discuss include: How has Christianity been communicated and received across different cultures? Was it the relationship between missions and colonialism? To what extent have colonized people been able to appropriate Christianity to oppose colonialism and/or develop new forms of religious expression?
