Description
A little understood, but impactful subculture in Utah is that of plural marriage. This course offers an opportunity to understand the historical, cultural, and legal issues of Utah's polygamy. The course will not deal specifically with religion except as it has impacted polygamist family practices and community life. We will explore Mormonism's polygamy history from 1840 until 1910 and learn of the various fundamentalist offshoots currently functioning. Speakers who are currently involved in polygamy and those who have left and/or support those who leave will address us. The Office of the Attorney General will discuss the legal issues of modern polygamy.
