We will pay particular attention to LNT and map and compass skills as we navigate our way through a maze of deep slick-rock canyons and high escarpments. This course will include discussions regarding resource management issues, activity skills, risk management and environmental ethics associated with backpacking on public lands. Class meets Sept. 16 only. Field trip Sept. 27-29. Prerequisite: Students should have completed one of the other desert backpacking classes, lightweight backpacking, or comparable experience; ability to backpack 8-10 miles per day in challenging terrain; familiarity with LNT; some experience with map and compass.
