Description
Training for students who want to become peer helpers in the Student Athlete Mentors (SAMs) program. A SAM is a friend to the team, who listens and communicates caring. SAMs provide information, referral, and support to team members, freshman student athletes in the Life Skills class, and other student-athletes. SAMs are not a substitute for professional help but may be a bridge to that help. Each SAM is trained in the idea of confidentiality. In addition to being available for team members, each SAM is responsible for assessing team needs. SAMs organize and lead the Student-Athlete Conference, participate in one community service project, and attend bimonthly meeting/classes.
