Description
Castilian or Spanish (Castellano or Espanol), the major language of the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, has evolved dramatically from its "vulgar" or "popular" Latin roots. We will explore the cultural, social, and political contexts for linguistic change in the Peninsula and overseas. How and why did the language change? Did regional Latin dialects become distinct languages? While prior knowledge of Spanish will deepen your experience, such knowledge is not necessary to enjoy this course.
