George Stevens, an Oscar-winning director, wanted to make films that would have lasting value. He began as a gag man and photographer and worked his way into directing stars such as Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, and Cary Grant. Stevens worked two or three years on many of his later films and in doing so created some of the greatest motion pictures of all time, including "Gunga Din", "Swing Time", "Woman of the Year", "I Remember Mama", "The More the Merrier", and "The Diary of Anne Frank". We will explore many of his major achievements and cover how his experiences during World War II changed the course of his filmmaking career. DVDs of many of his films will be available for class members to check out.
