Description
Students will engage in and reflect on the practice of Chicana/o journalism using Critical Race Theory and tenets of Chicana Feminism while working to produce Venceremos, an alternative, ethic, bilingual student newspaper. Students will contextualize the need for a Chicana/o newspaper at the University of Utah and Salt Lake Valley by understanding the complex realities of historically racialized, oppressed, and colonized communities; issues of privilege and power; and modes of resistance, agency and power through media activism. They will also develop basic design and layout skills using InDesign. Students will connect theory and practice through the production of a bilingual campus/community newspaper and learn to engage in cross-coalitional racial dialogue and activism. Open to non-majors.
