OSHER 528 - Contemporary Documentary Films

Documentary films have been an essential part of film culture since the invention of cinema. In the past 20 years, there has been an explosion of documentary filmmaking and an ever-increasing appreciation of documentary films by audiences. As in any art form, the styles and techniques have evolved, with documentary filmmakers making use of a variety of storytelling techniques to explore their subjects. In this class we will take a look at films that have gone outside the traditional "talking heads" documentary style and used creative new ways to tell stories.
