PRTS 2007 - 003 Avalanche-Level 1


Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory. Drops not possible after the 2nd day following this meeting. Class meets Jan 14 only. Field sessions: Jan 23, 24 and Feb 1. No camping. This 24 hour course meets all AAA guidelines. We will cover all the basics of avalanche hazard awareness, decision making, terrain selection, companion rescue, and snow stability assessment. The course will be 40 percent classroom based, and 60 percent field based. We will travel in the backcountry, in and around avalanche terrain. As well, during one of the field session days, the Brighton Ski Resort will be used to help identify techniques on how to travel safely in the backcountry when using lift access. Students will earn a certificate upon completion of this course. Field sessions Fri-Sun Feb 27, 28 - Mar 1. Day sessions only, no camping required. Students must be capable to travel in variable snow conditions in steep terrain with backcountry skis/skins,snowboard/splitboard, or snowshoes. Class will focus on snowpack, analysis of stability, decision making, snowpack metamorphosis (change), terrain features, safe travel, human factors and rescue scenarios. This is Level II of a two part avalanche sequence; Level 1 must be completed in year prior to 2014. Level 2 certificate of completion is provided. Documentation of Level 1 Course must be provided to U-Explore Department.
