Description
How do complex multicellular organisms, with their many specialized cell types precisely arranged, and with coordinated functions, arise from a single cell? This class addresses this question by examining the experimental evidence in both animal an dplant systems. Topics focus on the cellular, molecular and genetic bases or morphogenesis and differential gene expression. Current controversies surrounding embryonic stem cells, therapeutic cloning, gene therapy, genetic profiling and environmental influences on development will be discussed to illustrate developmental principles. Enrollment in BIOL 3235, Developmental Biology Lab, is optional, but encouraged.
