Description
This graduate-level course introduces students to current topics and issues concerning the development of literacy in early childhood, particularly the achievement of emergent literacy and the transition from emergent to early literacy, spanning from toddler to preschool years and the transition to formal schooling. Students examine the developmental patterns of reading and writing that precede conventional literacy, specifically considering cognitive and linguistic building blocks of early literacy, areas/domains of literacy development, and how this development may be fostered at home and school during early childhood.
