Description
This course is designed to provide students with an overview and conceptual framework for dealing with substance abuse prevention and treatment issues. Students will gain a basic understanding of the Hawkins and Catalano Risk and Protective Factor Model of Prevention and how these factors influence the addiction process. Students will learn about adolescent brain development and how childhood abuse and neglect impact the developing architecture of the brain. Students will also gain an understanding of the Utah substance abuse treatment system and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (SAM) Patient Placement Criteria. this course will build on the students' knowledge of human behavior and the social environment especially as it applies to the addiction process.
