Description
This course introduces students to the world of opera from its origins in Florence around 1600 CE. We will examine various styles of opera, including opera seria, opera buffa, singspiel, masque, opera comique, reform opera, lyric opera, music drama, verismo, impressionism, and expressionism. Attention will be given to the works of Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel, Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Bizet, Puccini, Berg, Menotti, and others.
