This field course complements the lecture component of Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins (TSB, GEO5920/6920). Students must be currently enrolled in TSB, have taken it previously, or receive special permission from the instructors to enroll in the class. This multi-day excursion will focus on field interpretations and discussions of supradetachment, extensional, and strike-slip basins and their associated tectonic elements in Eastern and Southern California (Death Valley, Panamint Valley, Southern Owens Valley, Ridge Basin). Students will gain experience reading primary literature, preparing short field-trip guide descriptions, leading field-trip stop discussions, and collecting and recording field observations.
