Description
A general introduction to the field of linguistics from an anthropological and scientific perspective as developed in the United States by anthropologists such as Franz Boas and Edward Sapir. This course introduces students to basic linguistic analysis, focusing in particular on topics of interest in linguistic anthropology including the comparison of human language and animal communication; the structure of human language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, etc.); language situated in its social context; and the study of language change over time.
