Seminar
Description
This graduate-level seminar is designed for students in the fields of psychology, education, social work, and counseling. The goal is to improve students' ability to provide culturally-sensitive services to diverse populations, and to be more skilled consumers and producers of research on diversity issues and mental health. The course will include three core components: (a) exercises, self-reflection, and discussion aimed at making students aware of their own culture, and of the inherent biases and assumptions which come with that culture, (b) readings and discussion designed to give students and overview of the empirical and theoretical literature on diversity issues, and (c) exposure to the skills necessary to be an effective service-provider to diverse populations (e.g., how do you work effectively with a translator?).
