Description
This course offers students an introduction to art appreciation and analysis through a study of diverse works of art. Through a close consideration of selected objects, we will explore the social role and meaning of art in various time periods and cultures. A critical examination of the idea and function of the concept of “art” will play an important role in this course. Students will develop a practice of close looking and description, and will learn how to think through the relationship of individual objects to the historical and social contexts of their production and reception.
