Description
This course is an undergraduate introduction to the field of second language acquisition (SLA). The intentions of this course are twofold: first, to serve as a broad overview of the goals of and approaches to SLA; and second, to provide a space for students to develop their skills as scholars, including reading primary literature, designing an empirical research study, and expressing themselves in writing. We will cover foundations of SLA, a history of the field, its relationship to linguistics, some methodologies used to elicit learner data, and brief introductions to various topics within SLA particularly those studied by faculty at the University of Utah.
