Description
Review of music history intended for graduate students who did not pass the diagnostic exam in music history. This course will survey Western art music from the medieval period through the present in its social, cultural, and political contexts. Students will explore the development of musical forms and genres, aesthetics, performance practices, institutions, and audiences over time. A grade of B- or better is required to pass this course and to enroll in music history and musicology courses at the graduate level.
