Description
This course provides an introduction to the automatic extraction of information from clinical and biomedical (e.g., the literature, textbooks, etc) texts. It includes an overview of the challenges of processing clinical and biomedical literature narratives and focuses on information extraction (IE) methods (e.g., pattern-matching methods, machine learning methods), existing NLP applications, an introduction to information retrieval, and a survey of resources for information extraction. The actual development, training, and evaluation of a simple information extraction application conclude this course. This introductory course lays the foundation for the Department’s Biomedical Natural Language Processing NLP Track. It addresses competencies (a),( b), and (c) as outlined for the NLtrack.
