Description
The average lifespan of humans has dramatically increased in the last decade due to advances in medicine. According to the United Nations, the world population of individuals aged 60 years or above will triple by 2050. In the UK alone, approximately 22% of the population will be 65 years or older by 2031, exceeding the number of those aged less than 25 years. The fast-growing aging population increases the likelihood of some diseases. Geriatrics, or geriatric medicine, is a branch of science that focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. The goal of this course is to help Osher members understand the challenges faced by people as they age, and recognize that there are preventive measures that can place oneself (or a loved one) on a path to healthy aging.
