Description
This course is a field-based seminar that has two complementary elements: (1) a scholarly component in which students work collaboratively with a leading arts teaching expert to develop arts teaching assessments and materials that focus on the effectiveness and relevancy of the art making process, and (2) application of materials with youth participating in University of Utah Youth Arts programs. Through these two elements, during the summer residency students examine a broad range of teaching and learning environments, the diversity of learners, arts integration, culturally responsive teaching, technology in the classroom, and classroom management. Students develop projects that are implemented with different community partners in this course and in its co-requisite, AFTA 6500. Post residency, students complete online interviews, discussion board prompts, and arts teaching reflections via journaling and individualized collage/media work.
