Description
This course is designed to provide the learner with information regarding the surgical aspects of the treatment of periodontal disease, as well as the consideration of pertinent systemic conditions, which may affect periodontal surgery. It builds on the foundational knowledge presented in Periodontics I and II. Topics covered in this course will include the rationale, indications and contraindications for various periodontal surgical procedures, including mucogingival surgery, treatment of bony defects, osseous grafting and periodontal tissue regeneration. The mechanisms and timing of healing of surgical sites, as well as post-surgical treatment will be presented. Current trends in surgical periodontics will be emphasized and guidelines for periodontal specialist referral will be underscored in the context of the management of periodontal disease.
