Description
An interdisciplinary course in Disability Studies provides an overview of the purposeful, unequal treatment experienced by people with disabilities in the U.S. The course explores the concept of disability in health, education, employment, and legal systems, as well as the perspectives of people with disabilities themselves. The course critically examines factors that support systemic oppression, and methods and strategies of moving toward a more inclusive society. Students will participate in a community engaged learning project that will help them to reflect and integrate key concepts from the course and their own disciplines. Readings and field trips will be combined with class discussions to prepare students with knowledge and understanding of disability in order to enhance students’ knowledge and skills as professionals and citizens.
