This course provides an overview of concepts and application of informatics and information technology (IT) in healthcare, including the practical aspects of managing information systems. The scope is designed from the perspective of managers and executive decision-makers of healthcare organizations. We emphasize managerial, organizational, financial, and policy issues stressing obtaining value from information systems in a healthcare setting. Topics include an introduction to healthcare informatics, electronic health record systems (EHRs), healthcare administrative systems, clinical decision making and computerized decision support, cybersecurity and business continuity, IT life cycle and value realization, population health, quality, and patient safety, regulatory and policy initiatives, and a special focus on emerging technologies and trends.
