The COVID-19 global pandemic has necessitated the development of a vaccine at unprecedented speed, resulting in the approval for the first mRNA-based vaccine. This course will focus on the research that led to the development of mRNA-based vaccines for SARS-Cov2, and develop students’ ability to critically read, evaluate, and discuss scientific publications. It will include topics in the fields of virology, immunology, RNA biochemistry, and vaccine development. This will be taught using a combination of reading, assigned homework, class discussion, in-class quizzes, communication exercises, and journal-club style group presentations, with an emphasis on active learning. Students will improve their ability to read and analyze primary scientific literature, work in teams, and effectively communicate science to their peers and the public. This is a remote learning class, where instruction will take place during the time listed in the online schedule. Students will join remotely for a learning experience that takes place together using technology.
