This course provides an overview of place-based urban ecology. Students learn methods and perspectives of the study of cities as ecosystems, and the implications for urban policy, planning, and design. Central to this course is an exploration of the ways human activities and decision making processes interact with the local environment and with other organisms. Emphasis is on the integration of biological, physical, and social perspectives in the study of urban ecosystems with several case studies about biodiversity, habitat, available resources, pollution and public health in Salt Lake City and its surroundings.
