ELP 5960 - 001 College Prison &Society

Targeted punishment in the U.S. funnels many would-be college students into detention, jail, prison, and associated mechanisms of state violence. These potential students are disproportionately of Color, from low-income backgrounds, and have been denied quality educational opportunities. This class will focus on the evolving relationship between higher education and opportunity in the broader context of the carceral state, including what responsibilities colleges and universities have in addressing the harms caused by targeted incarceration. Our conversations will center on the following question: Who deserves access to quality higher education, and why?
