Description
This is an introductory course to the principles of light propagation through optical components and in optical systems. Topics covered in geometrical optics include ray propagation through and imaging with single and multi-lens systems, the ray transfer matrix approach for analyzing optical systems, and simple optical instruments. Topics covered in physical optics include wave polarization and its manipulation, wave and Gaussian beam propagation, diffraction and imaging via spatial frequency representation, holography, optical resonators, and wave coherence.
