Description
This course examines central debates in Gender Studies by focusing on a range of topics of current interest in the field. Topics include: history and the stories we tell; empire and subjectivity; neoliberalism; the stratification of labor and reproduction; technologies of desire and reproduction; debates in scientific explanations of sex and gender; masculinity; and trans identity and experience. At the same time, the course locates these debates within a transnational and multicultural context. Debates include: sameness versus difference; subjectivity and identity; feminism in imperial contexts; increasingly biological readings of the sexed self and neoliberalism's individualizing pressures; and the challenges to the field of Gender Studies offered by masculinity and trans studies.
