Description
This course provides in-depth coverage of the Cognitive-Behavioral model of therapy practice. In this course, students will learn how to use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to address a wide array of client issues. The empirical bases of the theory and model will be examined, as well as applications to direct social work practice. Students will learn to conduct an assessment using the CBT model. Students will learn to move from assessment to intervention and have weekly ‘hands-on’ experiences through role plays and live supervision during class. We will explore a number of therapeutic techniques, including: cognitive restructuring of negative thoughts and core beliefs; imaginal rehearsal for skill development; behavioral activation for treatment of depression; exposure therapy and relaxation therapy for treatment of anxiety and phobias. By the end of the semester, students will have attained an advanced level of proficiency in CBT and will be able to apply cognitive-behavioral techniques in their work with clients.
