This course will use multidisciplinary approaches to explore the impact of sports in American culture through the intersections of identity (race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality) politics and socioeconomics. Theories and perspectives on the influence of sports to society will be used to examine topics, including the early years of professional sports, the industry of sports, race & sports, sexuality & sports, and legislating equity in organized sports. We will also consider some of the most controversial figures in sports.
