PED 5903 - 001 Hlth Eqty & SDoH Nav

This undergraduate course delves into the critical intersection of pediatric health, equity, and the social determinants of health (SDOH), equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate and address health disparities among children. This course focuses on pediatric health; however, the student will gain insight into the upstream and downstream impacts of key drivers of long-term, intergenerational poverty, including the racial disparities and structural factors contributing to this perpetual cycle of economic strife. The course explores the multifaceted factors influencing pediatric health outcomes, focusing on the role of social, economic, and environmental determinants in shaping children's well-being and influencing health into adulthood. This course aims to empower students to critically analyze and navigate the complex interplay of social determinants influencing pediatric health. We aim to equip students with practical skills to advocate for health equity among children and adolescents. This course is offered through the University of Utah, Department of Pediatrics, and is available to junior & senior undergraduate and graduate students. This course is a Community Engaged Learning (CEL) designated course. The course requirements consist of two components: a 1.5-hour/week in-person class/session and 3 hours/week screening patients and families for social needs and connecting them to community resources at Primary Children’s Hospital. Please note this class can be taken for 2 or 4 credits. Students' decision to take the class for 4 credits means that they will be expected to do two 3-hour shifts per week instead of one. Students participating in this course will work as community resource liaison experts in a clinical setting, gain in-depth exposure to community resources, and develop relationships with Department of Pediatrics faculty and community leaders who support individuals with social needs.
