PRTS 206 - 090 Avalanche Awareness
Aspiring backcountry travelers can learn where to find the gear, resources, and training to responsibly enjoy winter recreation. Students will begin to recognize and avoid avalanche terrain. This online course is designed to introduce students to the avalanche phenomenon, causes, and hazards. The course is a steppingstone to Avalanche Level 1, PRTS 2007.

Explore the Unita mountains when traveling peacefully by snowshoe. We will discuss winter safety and backcountry travel techniques in addition to studying the recreation management implications associated with snowshoeing in the Uintas. Overnight camping. Attendance at the first class meeting is mandatory. Drops not possible after the 2nd day following this meeting. Class meets Nov 11 only. Field experience Nov 22-24. Students that know how to ski and who are interested in learning to teach skiing at a professional level benefit from this class. We will cover strategies, theories, culture, and other topics related to skiing. Students will learn about building trust, assessing skills and emotions, setting goals, designing learning plans, and creating a safe and fun atmosphere for others on snow. Classes will be held on campus during the first half of the semester and at Brighton Resort at the end of the semester. Students will need to provide their own transportation to Brighton. Classroom meetings: Sept 3, 17, 24; Oct 1, 15, 22, & 29, Nov 5. Field/on-snow sessions at Brighton: Nov 23, 24, 30, Dec 1. * Dates may be adjusted due to snow conditions.
