Description
Nowhere is the time-worn adage 'A picture is worth a thousand words,' more apt than in the world of photojournalism. Photojournalism brings the human story to life, and images produced by photojournalists have helped end wars, paved the way for social justice, and spurred environmental reform. In this class, we'll examine elements of good documentary photos to see how they derive their power, then, through weekly assignments, strive to capture those elements in our own photography. We will cover shooting quickly to capture a moment, engaging subjects so they want to participate in your visual storytelling, equipment needs for successful photojournalism, the importance of technical know-how, and the ins and outs of obtaining photo release forms. We will also touch on how to submit your work for publication. Weekly critiques of assigned work will assist your learning. Please be familiar with the basics of photography and the workings of your camera.
