LLWRC 779 - Get Started: Read Like a Writer

An important and often neglected part of writing is reading. We are readers before we are writers, and reading continues to shape, to fill, and to drive our work once we become writers. In this one-day session we will explore the act of writerly reading: how does it differ from other kinds of reading? What do writers notice in the writing of others that the average reader might not, and how do they use what they find in their own work, without becoming imitative? Show up prepared to read, mark, and discuss. This course is designed (but not required) to be taken in conjunction with 'The Writer's Toolbox,' below. Please bring a sack lunch. Poet and creative writer Jennifer Tonge has an MFA from the U. She is the recipient of several national awards and fellowships, and her published work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including The American Literary Review, Folio, Poetry, Ploughshares, The New England Review, and Denver Quarterly.
