Description
It's fun, it's challenging, and, with its lack of dependence on partners and pricey equipment, it embodies the sense of freedom many climbers look for. Bouldering, or climbing on free-standing boulders without ropes, is one of the most popular forms of climbing today. Find out why in this five-session course. You'll learn the essentials, including basic climbing technique, route finding, proper spotting/falling technique, and the bouldering rating system. Each session, you'll be introduced to a new bouldering area with different challenges. A Saturday field trip to Joe's Valley, a popular bouldering area 2.5 hours from Salt Lake, will introduce you to the area's finest problems. Please meet at the Big Cottonwood Park & Ride at 5:45 pm for the weeknight classes. You will be encouraged to carpool to Joe's Valley. Please bring climbing shoes and a chalk bag to each meeting; other equipment is provided. Shawn is head climbing instructor at Rockreation and has taught basic and advanced climbing at Rocreation, the U, and SLCC. His experience ranges from sport to big wall aid climbing.
