Description
Students are introduced to the concept of substance dependence as a self-medication phenomenon. Models of healthy psychosocial development are presented, along with theories of developmental deviations leading to disorders of the self. Students are also introduced to the DSM-IV system of psychiatric diagnosis and to the concept of dual diagnosis. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on comprehensive, individualized assessment and intervention.
