Description
This course examines the history and practice of substance abuse-dependency prevention and treatment. An overview of diverse models and tools for dealing with prevention, addiction and recovery are presented. Evidence-based practice will be emphasized. Students will be introduced to American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) levels of care and patient placement criteria. Students will learn about special populations and social policy issues. Students will also be introduced to clinical supervision and management as they relate to the practice of addiction counseling. The course is taught through the use of reading assignments, group lecture and discussion, and out of the classroom assignments.
