PHARM 7567 - Clinical Toxicology

At the end of the course the student should be able to: Identify the necessary pieces of information to analyze a poisoning, describe the services of the Poison Control Center and the role it plays in the practice of pharmacy, understand the principles involved in the general approach to the poisoned patient, describe the toxicology mechanism of action for each of the agents discussed, describe the typical presentation following a poisoning with each specific agent, and outline a specific management plan for each of the agents discussed. This course will integrate knowledge of pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics and therapeutics. This course is intended to provide a foundation for future pharmacists in all practice settings to recognize the toxicological manifestations of unintentional or intentional misuse of drugs, to assess the potential severity of an exposure and to understand the principles involved in the management of a poisoned patient. This course will provide the student with an overview of the clinical manifestations, assessment tools and treatment of common drugs, chemicals and biologic agents.
