Description
This is one of two courses in the Population & Health concentration of the Sociology PhD program. The main aim of the course is to acquaint students with population studies through a comprehensive examination of the concepts, theories, debates and challenges that are of concern to the field. The course will place significant emphasis on gaining an understanding of processes that lead to the population change, such as fertility, mortality and migration. It will also concentrate on theories and debates that lie at the intersection of demography and sociology, such as family dynamics, aging and morbidity, AIDS and other infectious diseases, urbanization, development, and population policy. By the end of the course, students will have a firm understanding of the principles of population studies as a sub-discipline within social science and its links to sociology. This course is a complement to SOC 7071, Population Techniques, which focuses on the data, measures, models, and methods of population studies.
