Concepts will include the history of black screedance, the emergence of Sankofa, oppositional gaze, ephebism, “coolness,” polyrhythms and polycentrism. Each week students will read an article by theorists such as bell hooks, Stephanie Batiste, and Elena Benthaus, view and analyze Africanist aesthetics on screen, and practice applying these principles to their work through in-class camera activities. At the end of this course, students will produce a short dance film incorporating concepts explored during the semester. Students will have creative autonomy in exploring concepts of interest.

Africanist Aesthetics in Screendance is a critical theory course that centralizes discussion-based and experiential learning. Concepts will include the history of black screendance, the emergence of Sankofa, oppositional gaze, ephebism, “coolness,” polyrhythms and polycentrism. Each week students will read an article by theorists such as bell hooks, Stephanie Batiste, and Elena Benthaus, view and analyze Africanist aesthetics on screen, and practice applying these principles to their work through in-class camera activities. At the end of this course, students will produce a short dance film incorporating concepts explored during the semester. Students will have creative autonomy in exploring concepts of interest.
