Power, Politics, and Profits: Practical advice on how to succeed in any organization. In this class you will receive practical advice on how to succeed in any organization. You will learn how internal company politics work, what drives people to seek more power, and how the need for profits impact decision making. You will learn how to read a financial statement, (don’t be scared by this) entrepreneurship best practices, and how to recognize and deal with conflict. This class is for humanities majors who aren’t great at math, that don’t have a business background, but who need practical advice on how to succeed in their future career. We will also talk about the often overlooked fourth P, which is Purpose. With the right purpose, organizations and employees can find meaning in their work.

Power, Politics, and Profits: Practical advice on how to succeed in any organization. In this class you will receive practical advice on how to succeed in any organization. You will learn how internal company politics work, what drives people to seek more power, and how the need for profits impact decision making. You will learn how to read a financial statement, (don’t be scared by this) entrepreneurship best practices, and how to recognize and deal with conflict. This class is for humanities majors who aren’t great at math, that don’t have a business background, but who need practical advice on how to succeed in their future career. We will also talk about the often overlooked fourth P, which is Purpose. With the right purpose, organizations and employees can find meaning in their work.

Students will work as a team and with local community partners to report, co-host and produce at least five episodes that amplify stories from within Salt Lake City's diverse communities. Students, in collaboration with community media and non-profit partners, will produce a multimedia project that includes storytelling for audio, social media and online/print platforms. Course will include required, off-campus meetings and work sessions. Students should have successfully completed COMM 1610 or its equivalent and COMM 3555.
