This course is open only to students who have been accepted to participate in the Sorenson Impact Institute’s Impact Investing program. Course participants will be working 15-20 hours a week supporting the work of the Sorenson Impact Institute’s investing team and gaining direct apprenticeship-style experience and exposure to the work of an early-stage venture fund. Students will be involved with all elements of the venture capital deal process, from sourcing and screening investment opportunities, to preparing investment memos and presenting investment opportunities to external investment committees. Leading and Growing the Family Firm. This is an ONLINE course. Session 2, February 12, 2024 - March 17, 2024. Family-owned companies range from small to large, from local to multinational, and from privately-held to large publicly-traded closely-held corporations—that is, corporations controlled by the founding family. The involvement of family in these enterprises can be a source of strength and advantage, but can also spark managerial challenges that can cripple, if not destroy, the family firm. The overall purpose of this course is to develop skills and strategic knowledge that allows you understand and leverage the strategic advantages of family firms, while anticipating the unique challenges that sometimes arise when family and business meet. The course is designed for students who are interested in working in family firms (e.g., as entrepreneurs, managers, owners) or with family firms (e.g., as advisors, consultants, board members, bankers) or who come from a family firm background (e.g., next generation family owners).
