Topic: Essential Helping Skills in Counseling & Psychotherapy. Students must have already taken a course (e.g., PSY 2300, PSY 3260, PSY 2250, PSY 3320, or related) exposing them to psychology theories before enrolling in this class. Specifically, students must have a knowledge base of at least two of the following theories: psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, humanistic (client-centered theory), and behavioral. Please contact the instructor if you have questions about the pre-requisites. In this course, students will learn basic skills related to effective helping relationships in the context of counseling and psychotherapy. A model of the helping process will be introduced which covers theories on how people change and factors that contribute to the helping process. Helping skills that will be covered include skills exploring thoughts and feelings, fostering awareness, providing support, and facilitating action. Students will also learn conceptualization skills. As this course has an experiential component that is a significant part of their grade, students must be willing to engage in reflective practices, application of skills, and role plays.
